Yazid with Tambakrejo residents who are members of the CAMAR Group, undertook the diligent initiative of planting mangroves to alleviate the enduring menace of tidal floods that have plagued Semarang’s northern region for decades. Located on Java’s north coast, this area faces severe coastal erosion, increasing the risk of prolonged danger and prompting continuous conservation efforts.

SWEAT DRIPPING IN THE RIPPLES OF THE RIVER

Sri Umro, a fisherwoman, became the breadwinner for her family after her husband fell ill for many years. Every day she catches crabs in the seaside river using environmentally friendly fishing gear, while picking up plastic waste from the sea to sort at home and resell. Being a traditional fisherwoman in the midst of challenging natural conditions without adequate safety equipment, she continues to fulfill her daily needs.

THE INDEPENDENCE DAY: BETWEEN TEARS AND LAUGHTER

Each year, the people of Indonesia celebrate Independence day. There is no exception for a widow by the name of Sunarti (Nar) who lives alone, and other resident of the village of Timbulsloko, Demak, who have for more than a decade been adapting to the siege of tidal floods that come and go every day of the year. In this celebration, the most highly anticipated event for the community is the boat race. The community can laugh out loud and, for a moment, forget all the troubles happening to the place where they live. For Sunarti and the people of her village, the moment of independence is their way of reinterpreting what it means to live in a maritime country said to be rich in natural resources and what it means to be free from the climate crisis.

THE FIGHTER

“The Fighter” introduces Pencak Dor martial arts fighting and the story of Pati, who aims to compete in the ring. Yudi, an experienced fighter, trains Pati and other Silat students. The ‘free ring’ format of Pencak Dor contests have become a magnet for fighters wanting to test their strength and demonstrate skills in combat. With no winners nor losers, no insurance and only special prayers for safety, the Fighter focuses on the role and development of Pencak Silat in the fighters’ everyday lives.

Tomi is a disabled ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver who felt that people with disability has no hope in Indonesia. The service base on mobile technology, and not only intended for customers with disabilities, but also provides services to the general public. The existence of motorcycle taxi is very significant for people with disabilities because it can resolve problems of transportation and employment gradualy, especially in urban areas. So, the people with disabilities have a lot of opportunity to meet people, learn from their life experiences to find a new hope.

THE CRESCENT IN DRAGON VILLAGE

The Chinatown of Lasem is a site that holds the traces of multiculturalism which has become very important for building with Indonesian culture. Lasem brings together the various ethnic and religious groups namely as the Javanese, Chinese, Arabic, Islam, Christianity, Catholicism and Confucianism. The “Pesantren Kauman Lasem” was first established in 2005 by its founder and caretaker Gus Zaim who explains that the emblem of Chinese identity in the buildings is a form of acculturation between Javanese, Chinese, and Arabic descents. Multicultural interaction has lasted for a long time and has built awareness of the importance of dialogue between the parties. This is seen as a way to reduce potential conflicts due to the rise of radicalism and violence between religious communities.
